A New Decorative Jar for the Garden, Narcissus Paperwhite, Daylilies and Roses

Sunday was again time to shoot a new Periscope broadcast of what has happened in the garden last week. Since a couple of months now I am scoping live weekly about my garden and have a lot of fun doing it. I would like to invite everyone of you to join me on these weekly garden tours and come see my garden through the lens of my iPhone.

In the video, that I am publishing today here on my blog, I am showing you a blue and white hand painted decorative jar, that I just placed in the garden. I also talk about Narcissus Paperwhite bulbs and present you my brand new green bulb forcing vases. On the garden tour I stop by my newly planted white daylilies 'Gentle Shepherd' and towards the end we will look together at rosa 'Mary Rose', which was blooming profusely that day. I finish the tour by checking on my bearded Iris rhizomes to see the progress that they have made.

As always, thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the tour. I appreciate if you would leave me a comment. Thanks!

See you in the garden!

Christina

  1. That's a beautiful vase! I don't know why, but I'm always attracted to Delft and Delft-style pottery. It seems like it combines an old-fashioned, feminine style, with a strength and resilience that has staying power. One of my friends regularly forces Paperwhites for her friends, and it's such a wonderful gift!

    1. Beth, I also have a special affinity for blue and white china and pottery inside the house and also in the garden. Somehow it never gets old and adds a certain amount of freshness, cheer and energy to a garden space or a table setting.
I have already some blue glazed terracotta containers and spheres in the garden and I am amazed that they radiate a very different atmosphere in comparison to the blue and white jar. In a shady corner dark blue containers can look rather dull. I would love to have more blue and white containers in my garden, but unfortunately they are even more expensive than the plain blue ones :-(.

  4. Nice you have Paperwhites, I force them too for Christmas but not in the hyacinth glasses, just in a dish in the soil covered with moss. I have rather a collection of hyacinth glasses but only use them for forcing Hyacinths and use them sometimes as a vase. The blue Portuguese jar is a nice find from a flee market and shows wonderful with white roses. Great that ´Mary Rose´ is doing so well, here I too have still some flowers but yours is looking much better at this moment, it´s getting colder here in the morning just above freezing point. This rose actually never had mildew here in my garden and is already there for more than 15 years.
Thanks again for your wonderful video.

    1. Janneke, thanks again for your nice comment. I will see how my Paperwhites do in the Hyacinth forcing glasses. But it should work out. I remember your stunning collection of Hyacinth glasses in all possible forms and colors from your blog. So beautiful!
Hyacinths need to be chilled for a couple of weeks in the fridge in my climate, but Paperwhites don't need that extra treatment. Since our fridge is always overly full, I didn't want to bother with the Hyacinths, even though I like their blooms very much.

    1. Jocelyne, thank you very much for your kind words about my humble garden. I am happy to hear that 'Mary Rose' is a floriferous rose in your garden as well. It has an incredible good repeat as well. As a matter of fact, it is in the top three of my best repeaters together with 'Iceberg', 'Our Lady of Guadalupe!

  7. Dear Christina,

Sorry my comment is so late. I was so busy in the garden planting tulips. I thought, why not plant some tulips in your blue pot? It would make a big impression. Furthermore I wait to see you in the swimming pool! It looks so nice every time I see it. And swimming along your white border, with your periscope.... Groetjes,
    Hetty
