Skylar, the Rescue Doberman, is Loosing his Fear of the Pool...

...baby pool that is!

This summer has been hot and partly surprisingly humid here in San Diego. A good reason to use our pool to cool down. Strangely my husband and I hardly hop in, but we thought maybe our beloved dog would like it, so we tried carefully to get him acquainted with the pool and slowly lure him in. But boy, were we wrong. Skylar was scared of the pool!

So my husband thought we start with baby steps and bought Skylar a baby pool. If you click on the video below you can watch Skylar's first four trials to explore the water.

I was surprised how quickly Skylar learned that there is no danger coming from stepping into the baby pool, but even up to today he isn't using it to cool himself down. He seems to be like my husband and I and simply isn't keen on pools. Well, he certainly fits into the family!

  3. So nice to see Skylar´s progress in the babypool. We taught Snarf in the same way to go into the water, with the babypool I had for my young grandsons. He understood quickly and now loves swimming, but he is careful and never jumps into deep water, he only goes into it when he can walk until he cannot stand anymore and then he swims.

  5. This reminds me of the Doberman of a friend. This dog jumped in and out the water. So I think soon your dog will be swimming in the pool! Groetjes,

  6. I've never had a dog that liked the water. Damp wet sand on the beach yes, but none dared venture into the sea. Skylar is being ever so cautious. Baby Olli had his first trip to the swimming pool last week - we'll have the baby pool out next year no doubt.

  7. They are all so different - we have one dog who is petrified of water and refuses to go out of her depth, and another who just flings himself in wherever he is !

    1. Jane, that is what we have noticed in dogs that we had a chance to observe, too. Some seem to intermediately like water and others don't. There are also certain breeds that love water like Labradors and others like Rhodesian Ridgebacks that normally hate it. We might be able to coax Skylar into the pool over time, but I doubt that he will ever really enjoy it and that is fine with us. We just want to make sure that he knows how to get out of the pool by himself, in case he falls in accidentally and not get a panic attack and possibly drown.

  8. That is so funny! But your dog quickly learns. I am sure you could get him accustomed to the big pool, too, if you were willing to spend time in there yourself, coaxing him in with the ball and playing with him. I have never been a pool person myself. We belonged to a swim and tennis club when our children were small and we often went there to play in the pool with them. But I hated the whole thing of slathering with sunscreen and dealing with wet swimsuits. However, I would love a fountain!

    1. Sigrun, it is amazing to me how much the climate has changed in Germany, too! You really had a very hot summer there. I think gardeners around the world need to look for more drought and heat resistant plants to keep their gardens going in the future.

  11. Il n'est pas stupide ton toutou mais amusant et prudent. Il me semble que l'eau l'attire et je crois que dans quelques jours, il sautera dans l'eau.Ton chien est super mignon, craquant...
    Belle soirée

  13. Karen, Skylar is indeed very sweet and sensitive! We always think that he has the Doberman body, but not the typical courageous and fearless Doberman temperament.
