Two weeks ago my husband and I went with our rescue Doberman, Skylar, to the Del Mar Beach to get him more acquainted to beach life.
Skylar seems to like being at the beach, but so far he has not been very keen on water. We hope, that he can overcome his fears and really start to enjoying it, like many other dogs do. Here are some of his first attempts of becoming a great beach dog!
Wishing everyone in the US a wonderful rest of the Thanksgiving weekend!
Next time I will see you in the garden, again.

"Mom, is Dad serious, am I really suppose to go in there?"
"Okay, a little pet can go a long way, I feel so much braver now!"
"I can walk relaxed by the waves, but prefer to do it on the side facing away from them."
"Heh, mom, do you see me? I am so much closer to the waves now!"
"I am this close to the waves now, but I am not sure what to think about them! Dad really wants me to go in there, though. Mom, do you still think I should go, too?"
"Alright, I do it!"
"Well, it is not too bad."
"Especially if we go out very quickly after we have been in."
"Okay, I can do this again!"
"Hmm, can I drink this?"
"I am really deep into the water!"
"To splash a little bit around in the waves is fun, especially if Dad gets wet, too...
...but I still like jumping at the beach so much better. Do you see how high I can jump? Every dog can go into the water, but not every dog can jump this high. All humans are looking at me, when I do this."
"Yes, this performance deserves a treat!"
Oooh, there is another treat..."
"Look I am as tall as Dad is!"
"I love treats."
"Always."
"Do you have some more cookies?"
"Come on, give the treat to me!"
"Just give it to me."
"Give it to me, now!"
"Yes, I know, I am a good, boy."

What a treat! (Ha ha!) I enjoyed this post and was smiling with Skylar as he learned to test the waters. He is a very handsome dog, and so is your hubby! We have always had large dogs, though we don't have any dogs now. Sometimes I laugh at those miniature canines people carry around in their purses. Hard to believe a magnificent creature like Skylar belongs to the same species!
ReplyDeleteDeb, I am pleased that you enjoyed this post! You are right, the variety in dog breeds is quite stunning. Obviously I prefer the bigger breeds, otherwise we wouldn't have Skylar, but I have a soft spot for the little ones, too. The only thing that drives me crazy is when people don't allow a dog to be a dog and it doesn't matter if we are talking Pit Bull or Chihuahua.
DeleteWhat a beautiful/handsome dog is Skylar. Wonderful photos.
ReplyDeleteFabulous photos. A great way for Skylar to get used to the water.
ReplyDeleteSkylar is a handsome dog, and both he and your husband look as if they were enjoying themselves greatly.
ReplyDeleteUnas preciosas fotografías. Saludos.
ReplyDeleteOne step at a time, it looks as though Skylar is going to overcome his fear of water thanks to his human parents!
ReplyDeleteFantastic photo's.Christina. It's always great to go to the beach with a dog. Our dog Vito love's it to go. From the beginning of October the dogs are aloud to run free at the beaches. Fantastic to see. Hope you are doing well. Lots of love xxxx
ReplyDeleteIt´s fun to go with the dog to the beach,I loved to see these pictures with Skylar. He will certainly overwin his fear of water, especially with these delicious treats in prospect. Snarf loves going to the beach and running through the water but he also loves drinking the salty water so stupid, I always have to stop him, I always fail and he always gets sick.....
ReplyDeleteKudos to you. Our two dogs are rescue also and go to the beach everyday. Even tho there is a leash law ,the leash is only used when needed. Husband lets them run free and they do run like crazy and come when called. Best of luck with your new baby.
ReplyDeletePatsi, welcome to my blog and thanks for leaving a comment! How wonderful that you have rescued two dogs. It is awesome that your dogs come back when called.
DeleteSkylar had his first off leash run on a dog beach just about a week ago and it went well. He took off once to play with another dog and I was really holding my breath, worried if he would return, but he came back fairly soon. Still, Skylar's recall isn't the best, yet. We still have to work on that...
Skylar is a well-trained dog! What a smart and fun way to acclimate him to the water. I'm jealous that you can beach-walk this time of year. Enjoy your new buddy. :)

ReplyDeleteWonderful and handsome boys you have, Christina! They make a great team and your husband is so kind and patient. Lovely photos - I am sure Skylar will enjoy his trips to the beach more and more, especially if there are treats! So nice to spend the day at the sea-shore. xo Karen
